Join the Select Rehabilitation Education Team on Tuesday, November 15, 2022 for a 7-hour Alzheimer’s Disease & Dementia Care Seminar. Completion of this class allows for the application for the Certified Dementia Practitioner (CDP) credential for those that qualify. All are invited to register and attend this seminar, whether you are pursuing your CDP certification or not.

Dementia Course Goals and Objectives:

• To further fundamental education on types of dementia and dementia care
• To foster communication methods that enhance sensitivity and respect for the dementia client
• To identify the characteristics of depression as they relate to dementia
• To describe strategies for delusions, hallucinations, hoarding and wandering
• To strategize methods to address aggressive behaviors, catastrophic reactions, intimacy and sexuality
• To enumerate strategies to bring quality of life to personal care such as pain, bathing, dressing, toileting, nutrition, falls and sleep disturbances
• To provide examples of appropriate and person-centered activity strategies for those with dementia
• To identify environmental modifications that enhance safety and quality of life
• To gain resources for staff and family support, abuse and neglect prevention
• To describe concepts of diversity and cultural competence as these relate to dementia
• To foster ideas about spiritual care and end of life issues
• To foster the concept of person-centered care that reduces unwanted reactions and brings quality and joy to the person with dementia and their caregivers

Those who complete the course (and fulfill other requirements) will be able to apply online for CDP for only $35 (normally $135). Those who are CDP certified will have access to a large library of resources on NCCDP website. CDP certification renews every 2 years, and only requires 10 hours of general CEs. Any senior living CEs apply.

Speaker: Kari K. Brizendine, PT, CWS, CDP, CADDCT, CMDCP Kari, a Physical Therapist, is a graduate from Virginia Commonwealth University/Medical College of Virginia. An Education Specialist for Select Rehab, one of our nation’s largest long-term care rehab providers, Kari has spent over 37 years working with the geriatric population in a multitude of clinical settings where she has been responsible for patient care, clinical programming, education and staff development. She is a Certified Wound Specialist through the American Board of Wound Management,  a Certified Dementia Practitioner and Trainer through the National Council of Certified Dementia Practitioners, a Certified Montessori Dementia Care Professional and she is LSVT Big Certified. Her predominant interest has been in serving those with dementia, their caregivers, healthcare providers and families, with the message that each person with dementia continues to have a life that matters and that quality is possible if we all join that person using his or her personal interests, residual skills and memories in what she calls “My Way”. She is the co-author of My Past is Now My Future: A Practical Guide to Dementia Possible Care and author of Though You Do Not Know My Name I Know You Love Me Just the Same.

Continuing Education: 7 hours of continuing education from Nebraska DHHS Regulation and Licensure, Board of NHA has been approved for this conference. Appropriate records will be maintained for other disciplines to receive credit from their credentialing organizations. 7 nursing contact hours for all nurses, provided by IWCC, Iowa’s Board of Nursing Provider #6.
