MDS Excellence: Elevate Quality, Drive Outcomes

This two-day, interactive course provides a comprehensive dive into the Minimum Data Set (MDS) and Resident Assessment Instrument (RAI) process. Attendees will explore section-by-section coding, data collection strategies, and interdisciplinary documentation practices essential to person-centered care. With hands-on workshops, case studies, and live Q&A sessions, participants will enhance their skills in Quality Measures management, PDPM optimization, and compliance documentation. Designed for beginner to intermediate MDS professionals, this course equips attendees with the knowledge and confidence to strengthen facility outcomes through coding precision and clinical excellence. Participants may register for both days or may choose one day.

Virtual Attendance Option: In-person attendance is preferred for this event. However, for those who live more than 3 hours from Lincoln, there will be a virtual option available. Virtual attendees will indicate their preference when registering and will receive the connection link prior to the event. Attendance will be taken regularly for virtual attendees. All CEs are available for virtual attendees, including nursing contact hours. The cost for virtual attendees is the same as in-person attendees.

Day 1 (August 19, 2025): Day one will be an MDS 101 presentation covering the basics of the MDS and the RAI process with information related to:

  • During the morning session there will be a section-by-section review of the MDS including common pitfalls and misconceptions of coding, as well as suggestions for organization of data gathering, with breakout to group scenarios related to coding. The attendee will understand the importance of regulatory compliance with the RAI manual guidelines for coding assessments.
  • A review of supportive documentation for coding of all sections of the MDS and the process ongoing hand-in-hand review with the IDT team for success. The attendee will consider the interdisciplinary model for assessment documentation and their impact on the person centered/individualistic approach to resident care.

Day 2 (August 20, 2025): Day two will move into more advanced MDS training. The two-day course is designed to enhance the skills and knowledge of new and intermediate MDS nurses with relation to:

  • Review of the Quality Measures Star and the impact the MDSC makes during the morning session. The attendee will gain an understanding of long-stay and short-stay quality measures and exactly where they come from as well as, processes and systems which prevent negative outcomes.
  • A PDPM review, as well as CAAs and Care planning sessions, with break-out group activity in the afternoon session.

Course Level: Beginner to Intermediate (Ideal for new and mid-level MDS Coordinators or nurses stepping into MDS roles.)

Audience: Post-acute healthcare professionals and staff, including any staff member responsible for completion of any part of the MDS, including nursing, dietary, activities, social services, and medical records. Administrators will find the information provided in this class useful for understanding the impact of the MDS on facility systems and processes and well as impact on quality measures and star ratings.

Continuing Education: 14 hours of continuing education from Nebraska DHHS Regulation and Licensure, Board of NHA has been approved for this on-line event. Appropriate records will be maintained for other disciplines to receive credit from their credentialing organizations. 14 nursing contact hours for all nurses, provided by IWCC, Iowa’s Board of Nursing Provider #6. Approval pending. Attendance will be taken in the Zoom meetings for virtual attendees.

Cancellation Policy: No cancellations will be accepted for this event. Substitutions are welcome. However, if state surveyors are in your community at the time of the event, your registration fees can be applied to a future LeadingAge Nebraska event.
