MDS Webinar Series: Are You Ready for the Oct. 1 Changes? Webinar #1

Purpose: Significant changes to the Minimum Data Set (MDS) patient assessment tool released by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services will be effective Oct. 1, 2023. Now is the time for skilled nursing facilities to understand the changes so they can prepare their staff and settings ahead of the deadline. The webinars in this series are stand alone and registration must be submitted separately.

Webinar #1 – MDS Changes and Challenges
Thursday, June 15, 2023, from 1 – 2:30 p.m. CT (12 - 1:30 pm MT)
Suggested Audience: Nursing Home Administrator, Director of Nursing, MDS Coordinator, Interdisciplinary Team, Nurse Manager, Social Workers, Rehabilitation, Dietary, and Activities Staff

  • Examine your current processes and steps for a successful transition.
  • Review strategies to transition from section G to GG.
  • Discuss the capturing of data related to social determinants.

Webinar #2 – Section GG: Accurately Capturing Functional Abilities
Tuesday, June 27, 2023, from 1 – 2 p.m. CT (12 - 1 pm MT)
Suggested Audience: Director of Nursing, MDS Coordinator, Interdisciplinary Team, Nurse Manager, and Rehabilitation Staff

  • Examine steps to capture the residents' functional abilities accurately.
  • Describe the changes to Section GG for the MDS process effective October 2023.
  • Discuss strategies for managing the MDS under the new RAI guidelines.

Webinar #3 – The A, B, C, D, and Q's: MDS Changes for Social Services
Tuesday, July 18, 2023, from 1 – 2 p.m. CT (12 - 1 pm MT)
Suggested Audience: Nursing Home Administrator, Director of Nursing, MDS Coordinator, Interdisciplinary Team, Nurse Manager, Social Workers, Rehabilitation, Dietary, and Activities Staff

  • Discuss culturally competent and trauma informed care.
  • Examine the changes in the interview process related to the PHQ-02-09.
  • Identify components of the critical element pathway (CEP) resident interview that relate to the MDS interviews.

Webinar #4 – MDS and Standards of Participation: Steps to Prepare for a Successful Survey
Thursday, Aug. 3, 2023, from 1 – 2 p.m. CT (12 - 1 pm MT)
Suggested Audience: Nursing Home Administrator, Director of Nursing, MDS Coordinator, Interdisciplinary Team, Nurse Manager, Social Workers, Rehabilitation, Dietary, and Activities Staff

  • Discuss the long-term care survey pool selection based on the current MDS assessments.
  • Review the importance of the MDS assessment and areas prone to coding errors.
  • Examine three strategies to ensure MDS assessment, CAA summaries, and resident care plan accurately reflect the residents' current needs.

Webinar #5 – Quality Measures: How Will the Changes Affect the Quality Reporting Program?
Tuesday, Aug. 29, 2023, from 1 – 2 p.m. CT (12 - 1 pm MT)
Suggested Audience: Quality Assurance/Quality Improvement Staff, Nursing Home Administrator, Director of Nursing, MDS Coordinator, Interdisciplinary Team, Nurse Manager, Social Workers, Rehabilitation, Dietary, and Activities Staff

  • Discuss the changes to the Five Star Rating Program.
  • Review the impact of the final rule for fiscal year 2024.
  • Examine the changes to the data completion threshold.

Continuing Education: Eligible for up to 5.5 clock hours The webinars in this series have been designed to meet the CEU approval criteria for the Minnesota Board of Executives for Long Term Services and Supports (MN-BELTSS) and the Minnesota Board of Nursing. Participants may also request a general certificate of attendance. CEUs are earned only for the individual registered.

Cut-Off/Cancellation: Registration cut-off date/cancellation deadline is two business days prior to the live webinar date. Webinars will be recorded for on-demand purchasing and viewing if you can’t attend live. Cancellations must be made in writing and are subject to a $25 processing fee. No-shows will be billed the full webinar fee. LeadingAge Minnesota reserves the right to cancel this webinars series.
