Leslie Scofield, the Director of First Responder Education from UNMC will be facilitating a hands-on, technical presentation on disaster preparedness requirements, planning, and activities. Developed specifically for non-hospital healthcare facilities such as long-term care centers, hospice, intermediate care facilities, home health agencies, and other healthcare provider types, this technical workshop will provide information to help the participant understand CMS and Joint Commission requirements for Emergency Planning and Preparedness. At the end of this presentation, participants will be able to:

1. Explain CMS and the Joint Commission requirements for non-hospital healthcare facilities

2. Recognize how the disaster planning process can be incorporated into my current organizational plan

3. Explore the various types of disaster exercises to ensure organizational readiness

4. Discuss the significance of having an inclusive risk communication process

Audience: Post-acute healthcare staff, such as assisted living, skilled nursing & hospice/palliative care, and home health agencies. Interested individuals would include administrators, nursing leaders and directors, social services, environmental services & other interdisciplinary members.

Presenter: Leslie Gunning-Scofield, MPH, Director of First Responder Education, University of Nebraska Medical Center. Leslie Scofield has been involved with EMS, public health emergency preparedness and response educational activities since joining the University of Nebraska Medical Center in 2002. She has helped first responders, hospitals and public health practitioners identify gaps in knowledge and preparedness as well as developing solutions that provide education, exercising and planning. She has provided oversight for development of several educational and leadership programs geared toward public health emergency response. Currently, she is an Instructor in the Department of Epidemiology at the UNMC College of Public Health and Director of First Responder Education with the Center for Preparedness Education. She holds a Masters in Public Health from the University of Nebraska Medical Center, serves on the UNMC College of Public Health Alumni Engagement Council and on the Board of Directors for the Public Health Association of Nebraska.

Appropriate records will be maintained for other disciplines to receive credit from their credentialing organizations. 6 nursing contact hours for all nurses, provided by IWCC, Iowa’s Board of Nursing Provider #6. Approval pending.
