Risk Based Surveys Have Arrived in Nebraska

Nebraska is a testing site for the new risk based nursing home survey. CMS is testing the Risk Based Survey (RBS) approach, which allows high-performing nursing homes to receive more focused, less resource-intensive inspections. The pilot aims to improve overall oversight and time efficiency. In order to meet these qualifications, the nursing home must be in the highest performance category, with a maximum of 10% per state. Typical factors are they have fewer historical citations, better staffing numbers, and low hospitalizations. According to the state survey department, they are generally planning one less day per visit and it could involve a smaller survey team. The states largest struggle is how to continue with all state related regulations if they are not called for in the abbreviated federal requirements. The state has only completed a couple of these surveys. LeadingAge Nebraska has heard from one member in Nebraska that has been selected for this survey type and is currently under review. There are currently 20 states piloting to validate the results.
